History of Vishwakarma Puja

Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect, with four arms and a white beard

Vishwakarma Puja honours Lord Vishwakarma, revered in Hindu tradition as the divine architect and craftsman of the gods. The festival is best known today as the day when workshops, factories and offices pause to worship their tools and machines, but its story is much older. Its roots lie in the Vedas, its legends grew in the epics and Puranas, and its present form took shape among artisans, craft communities and, in modern times, industrial workers across India.

Vishvakarman in the Rigveda

The name Vishvakarman means "the maker of all" or "the one whose work is everything". In the Rigveda, two hymns of the tenth mandala are addressed to Vishvakarman, who is praised as the all-maker: the one who fashioned heaven and earth, who sees in every direction and who gave form and name to the other gods. In these early hymns Vishvakarman is less a craftsman than a cosmic creator, closely linked with Prajapati, the lord of creatures.

Over time this abstract idea of the creator as a master builder gave way to a more personal figure: a divine craftsman who designs and builds for the gods. Both ideas survive in the way devotees speak of him today, as the creator of the world and as the patron of everyone who makes things with skill.

The architect of the gods in the epics and Puranas

In the epics and Puranas, Lord Vishwakarma becomes the deva-shilpi, the craftsman of the gods. The Mahabharata praises him with titles such as lord of the arts, maker of a thousand crafts, carpenter of the gods and the most eminent of artisans. According to tradition, his creations include:

  • Dwarka, the city of Lord Krishna, built by the sea.
  • The golden city of Lanka, which later became the capital of Ravana.
  • The Pushpaka Vimana, the celebrated flying chariot.
  • The Vajra, Indra's thunderbolt, made from the bones of the sage Dadhichi, who gave his life so that the gods could defeat the demon Vritra.
  • Divine weapons and palaces of many gods, each believed to carry special powers.

Another well-known story concerns his daughter Sanjna (also called Saranyu), who was married to Surya, the sun god. Unable to bear her husband's blazing radiance, she left his home. According to tradition, Lord Vishwakarma then trimmed some of Surya's brilliance, and from the glowing fragments he fashioned celestial weapons, including the Sudarshana discus of Lord Vishnu and the trident of Lord Shiva. The Vishwakarma Puja katha, read on the day of the puja, tells further stories of his glory and of the devotees who worshipped him.

Popular tradition also links his work to the different ages (yugas): the heavenly realm (Swarga) in the Satya Yuga, Lanka in the Treta Yuga and Dwarka in the Dwapara Yuga. In these stories he appears as the builder behind several of the great cities of sacred history.

How Lord Vishwakarma is depicted

In paintings and idols, Lord Vishwakarma is usually shown with four arms and a white beard, a sign of age and wisdom. His hands hold the instruments of his work, such as a measuring rod or scale, a water pot, a book and a noose. His vehicle is a swan (hamsa). In Bengal and much of eastern India, he is often shown with an elephant, a youthful face and a more regal look. Each form reflects the same idea: knowledge, measurement and skill brought together in the act of creation.

From craft communities to factory floors

For centuries, carpenters, blacksmiths, metalworkers, stonemasons, goldsmiths and other artisans have looked on Lord Vishwakarma as their patron, and many craft communities regard him as their ancestor. Their worship of tools on a fixed day each year grew from a simple belief: the skill in a craftsman's hands, and the tools that serve it, are gifts that deserve respect.

As India's mills, railways, mines, factories and workshops grew, this festival of artisans became the festival of the working world. Engineers, architects, mechanics, machine operators, drivers, electricians, welders and factory workers adopted it as their own. Today it is especially popular in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam and Tripura, and workplaces across the country mark it in some form. The beliefs behind this devotion are explored further on the beliefs behind Vishwakarma Puja page.

Why the festival falls in September

In eastern India and much of the country, Vishwakarma Puja is observed on Kanya Sankranti, the day the sun enters Kanya (Virgo) in the sidereal solar calendar. Because it follows the sun rather than the moon, the date is nearly fixed, usually 16, 17 or 18 September. In parts of North India, such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh, Vishwakarma Day is observed on the day after Diwali, alongside Govardhan Puja, and some communities observe Vishwakarma Jayanti on Magha Shukla Trayodashi. The Vishwakarma Puja date page lists the dates for the coming years.

How the tradition lives on

The way the day is kept still reflects its long history. Tools, machines and vehicles are cleaned and decorated, and work usually stops for the day. Factories and workshops set up pandals with an image or idol of Lord Vishwakarma, and workers and their families gather for a community puja. Tools are given tilak, flowers and akshat, the katha is heard, the aarti "Om Jai Shri Vishwakarma" is sung and prasad is shared among everyone. In Bengal and Bihar the sky fills with kites. The full method is described in the Vishwakarma Puja vidhi.
