Vishwakarma Puja is the worship of Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect and patron deity of artisans, engineers and workers. Since the puja is often held at the place of work, a rangoli is usually made at the main door, in front of the chowki that holds the picture or idol of the Lord, or near the tools and machines that will be worshipped. Tips for making rangoli for the puja

• Sweep the floor and let it dry before you start. In a workshop, wipe away oil and grease first, because powder will not settle evenly on a slippery or dusty surface.
• Mark a grid of dots or a light chalk outline before you add colour, especially for round or symmetrical designs.
• Fill the large areas first and draw the fine lines and borders last, so that your hand does not smudge finished parts.
• Rangoli powder, rice flour, turmeric, kumkum and flower petals (marigold, rose or chrysanthemum) all work well. White rice flour lines look neat even without colour.
• Suitable motifs include an Om, a swastika, a lotus, a kalash or a diya. Some people also add simple shapes linked to the day, such as a gear wheel, a hammer or a kite, since kite flying is popular on Vishwakarma Puja in Bengal and Bihar.
• Pour powder from a paper cone or between your thumb and finger for thin, even lines. A small tea strainer helps to spread fine powder over a large area.
• Do not draw the rangoli where people need to walk or where machines and vehicles will be moved during the day.
• If you place diyas on or around the rangoli, keep them well away from fuel, oil, dry petals and loose clothing, and never leave them unattended.
