Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect and craftsman of the gods, is worshipped above all in workshops, factories and homes, where tools and machines are honoured on Vishwakarma Puja. There are also temples dedicated to him, many of them looked after by local communities of artisans, carpenters, smiths and builders who regard him as their patron deity. Vishwakarma Mandir, Mandi (Himachal Pradesh)
Mandi, a town on the banks of the Beas river, is known for its many old temples and is often called the "Chhoti Kashi" of Himachal Pradesh. Among its shrines is a small Vishwakarma Mandir, listed on Mangvayin Road, where local devotees of Lord Vishwakarma come for darshan.
In Himachal Pradesh, as in much of North India, Vishwakarma Day is widely observed on the day after Diwali, alongside Govardhan Puja. On that day many craftspeople and families offer prayers at temples, and many also worship their own tools at home or at work.

Sri Virat Vishwakarma Bhagawan Devalayam stands in Vishwabrahmana Colony, Lakshmanaraopuram, in the coastal town of Machilipatnam, the headquarters of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh. The name "Virat Vishwakarma" refers to Lord Vishwakarma in his cosmic form as the creator of all things.
In Andhra Pradesh and other southern states, the Vishwabrahmin (Vishwakarma) community of goldsmiths, blacksmiths, carpenters, sculptors and metalworkers traditionally regards Lord Vishwakarma as its ancestor and guiding deity, and the name of the colony reflects that community.

How Lord Vishwakarma is shown in temples
In temple images and pictures, Lord Vishwakarma is usually shown with four arms and a white beard, holding the tools of his craft, such as a measuring rod or scale, a water pot, a book and a noose. His vehicle is a swan (hamsa), and in Bengal and eastern India he is often shown with an elephant. According to tradition, he built the city of Dwarka for Lord Krishna, the golden city of Lanka and the Pushpaka Vimana, and made Indra's Vajra from the bones of sage Dadhichi. In the Rigveda, Vishvakarman is praised as the all-maker in two hymns of the tenth mandala.
Tips for visiting a Vishwakarma temple
- Check darshan timings with the temple or with local people before you go, as they may change on festival days.
- Expect larger crowds around Kanya Sankranti in September and, in North India, on the day after Diwali.
- Dress modestly, remove footwear where asked and follow the customs of the temple.
- Simple offerings such as flowers, a garland, incense, fruits or sweets are common. Ask before taking photographs inside the shrine.
Worshipping Lord Vishwakarma at home or at work
Most devotees honour Lord Vishwakarma where they work: in a workshop, factory, office or shop. If you cannot visit a temple, you can perform the puja at your workplace following the Vishwakarma Puja vidhi, listen to the Vishwakarma Puja katha and end with the Vishwakarma aarti. A simple mantra used by many devotees is "Om Vishwakarmane Namah".

मंदिरों में भगवान विश्वकर्मा का स्वरूप
मंदिरों की प्रतिमाओं और चित्रों में भगवान विश्वकर्मा को प्रायः चार भुजाओं और सफ़ेद दाढ़ी के साथ दिखाया जाता है। उनके हाथों में शिल्प के उपकरण होते हैं, जैसे नापने का गज़ या तराज़ू, जल पात्र, पुस्तक और पाश। उनका वाहन हंस है, और बंगाल तथा पूर्वी भारत में उन्हें अक्सर हाथी के साथ दिखाया जाता है। परंपरा के अनुसार उन्होंने भगवान कृष्ण के लिए द्वारका नगरी, सोने की लंका और पुष्पक विमान का निर्माण किया, तथा महर्षि दधीचि की अस्थियों से इंद्र का वज्र बनाया। ऋग्वेद के दसवें मंडल के दो सूक्तों में विश्वकर्मा की स्तुति सबके रचयिता के रूप में की गई है।
